Floy Hutchings lived in Yosemite all her life, and was a tomboy as a little girl, earning her the nickname Squirrel. Her father opened the first hotel in Yosemite and was leading guided tours in 1868, when he hired John Muir--who later became a renowned naturalist and went on to found the Sierra Club--as a sawyer and carpenter. Muir befriends Floy and teaches her about the subtleties of her natural surroundings, from the leaf-chewing ants on the ground to the most spectacular views in the mountains. Author Emily Arnold McCully`s wondrous full-color watercolors expressively enhance her text. The reader is surprised to find photographs of Floy and Muir in a detailed Author`s Note at the end, and can later read more about the characters in books by both John Muir and John Hutchings, and in books about Muir.
